An outstanding deficit aside, it’s still a great day in South Carolina, according to a vast majority of Palmetto State citizens surveyed in the most recent Winthrop Poll.
The results, which were released today, show that almost 65 percent of residents were not stressed the day before they took the survey. Within the same time frame, almost 74 percent of residents said they hadn’t been worrying a lot.
In a state known for poor dietary habits and high obesity rates, nearly 70 percent of citizens polled said they had engaged in somewhat strenuous physical activity during the past month.
Results also show that a majority of polled residents feel the economy, jobs and federal budget are the hot-button issues plaguing the U.S.
The same number of individuals who said the economy is getting better also said it was getting worse, the results show.
S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has emerged as the most nationally recognized South Carolinian in the minds of residents, while close to 24 percent of residents polled feel very or somewhat favorably disposed toward Stephen Colbert, the political satirist who was raised in Charleston, S.C., and frequently mentions the state on his show, “The Colbert Report.”
Residents feel Haley’s endorsement of GOP contender Mitt Romney may have helped accelerate her national profile.
Survey workers polled residents between Jan. 29 and Feb. 6. Residents were not polled on Super Bowl Sunday, which was Feb. 5.
