WU police chief praises students, recovery efforts

By Kaitlyn Schallhorn

The Owens fire may have prevented students from going to class on Monday, but it didn’t stop their Winthrop spirit from reaching out to emergency responders.

Students provided beverages such as tea and lemonade, as well as baked cookies for those fighting the fire.

Frank Zebedis, Winthrop chief of police, praised the university for its quick response time in cleaning up the campus after the fire and rescheduling classes.

“I think we also need to remind the students the efforts of recovery are still on-going and will continue for several weeks and even months,” he said.

Although the flames have been doused, Scholars Walk and Owens are blocked off indefinitely.

Students aren’t allowed inside the restricted area for safety reasons and are strongly encouraged to find alternate routes.

“The students on the campus need to respect the fences and officials managing perimeter points,” Zebedis wrote in an e-mail.
