Winthrop’s new lacrosse coach, John Sung, shared the latest news with The Johnsonian on the state of recruitment, scheduling and new additions for his program. Sung could not say for sure whether his squad will be playing their home games at Eagle Field when the team kicks off in the spring of 2013, but said that the site was “where we assume we will play our home matches.”
“What we know and what the students know are plans, we haven’t slotted it in at this point,” he said.
Emilia Ward has left the program as assistant coach and has been replaced by Ohio State graduate Amanda Shimp. The former Buckeye was named to the Second Team All-American Lacrosse Conference and scored 25 goals in her junior season. Coach Shimp began work this week.
The six lacrosse players that are on campus at the moment are having scheduled practices and lifting sessions, just as they will have when they begin their official first season in 2013.
“Practice is going really strong, people are going good and we’re going through everything well,” Sung said.
Sung also confirmed the first two games of the 2013 schedule will be played against Navy, on February 9 and Marquette, on an undetermined date, for the first home game.
“We’ll spend the next month preparing for the signing day [on November 9], that’s a big day for us,” Sung said.
Sung is expecting to bring in at least 20 new recruits for the upcoming season.
