We have all seen the television commercials, that eccentric old man daring the world to keep up and also letting everyone know that he unwinds with a nice beer. If you are out of the loop, we are talking about Dos Equis, a Mexican beer made famous by The Most Interesting Man in the World.
First a bit of background: Dos Equis is a product of the Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery and is a lager style beer dating back to 1897 (wow, history). Dos Equis has been imported to the U.S. since 1973.
It comes in two varieties, Special Lager and Ambar; however we will concern ourselves with the main brand, Special Lager.
The pour results in a dark amber-color more in tune with the hue of a pale ale rather than a lager. The nose is a mixture of toasty malt and subtle “hoppyness” that manifests itself ever so slightly. Upon the first sip you will notice the heavy carbonation (Again the color led me to think of a less carbonated brew, but we cannot judge a book by its cover eh?). As you continue to drink you can enjoy the mellow malty notes coming together with the bitters. For me the bitters almost lend themselves to the carbonation of the drink and work together to give you a nice refreshing taste.
Final rating: Well drinking this beer definitely will not make you want to wrestle a cougar or anything, but it’s good none the less. Coming in at right under 5% ABV and moderately priced, this cerveza gets a B- rating from me. So the next time you are catching lunch or dinner at your favorite Mexican joint, consider pairing your meal with a Dos Equis.
