Bats go quiet for Eagles in out-of-conference game
The Winthrop baseball team dropped an out-of-conference game 14-5 at ACC power North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels improved to 17-9.
Junior Eddie Rohan got the Eagles started out on the right foot with a solo home run in the top of the first inning, his team-leading ninth on the year.
Freshman Zak Blair gave Winthrop a 2-0 lead in the second with an RBI groundout that plated sophomore Chas Crane.
“We started out playing pretty well,” Winthrop coach Joe Hudak said.
After the Tar Heels tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning, Winthrop senior Matt Thielepape broke the tie with a two-run homer in the visitor’s half of the third.
North Carolina overtook the Eagles with a five-run fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
Freshman pitcher Matt Pierpont worked four innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) and nine hits to fall to 0-1 on the season.
“In the fifth inning they got a couple of hits, and we couldn’t stop it after that,” Hudak said.
Junior Tyler Cook finished off the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI base hit in the seventh, one of his two hits on the night.
