Small bag of marijuana found as car is towed from water
A disc golfer visiting from Wisconsin made a big splash on the course today when his blue Ford Explorer rolled into Winthrop Lake.
Winthrop Police officers were called at 8:15 this morning after two men, both attending the U.S. Disc Golf Championship, saw the vehicle rolling into the lake, the police report said.
The men told police they parked beside the roadway, left the truck and stepped to the shore to take pictures when they heard the SUV go into the water.
The report said the vehicle was submerged up to the hood line in the front and taillights in the rear. A towing company was called to retrieve the SUV.
After pulling the vehicle out, police noted the transmission was positioned into drive, according to the report.
While pulling the vehicle out of the water, a small bag of marijuana fell out, according to Judy Longshaw, news and media services at Winthrop.
A second man, not the owner of the vehicle but also from Wisconsin, was charged with simple possession, Longshaw said.
