Structure of Owens is okay, dean of arts and sciences wrote

STAFF REPORTS

The first assessment of Owens Hall shows that the structure of the building has not suffered major damages, according to an e-mail Debra Boyd, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, sent to faculty on Sunday.

However, "a much more detailed assessment will be needed to guarantee that the building is safe,” Boyd wrote in the e-mail.

Summer classes in Owens will be rescheduled to other buildings.

“We hope (Owens) will be available by the end of the summer,” Boyd wrote.

Firefighters contained the fire to the attic of Owens, which needs a new roof. But parts of the Bancroft Annex, which is connected to Owens, also had the roof damaged, according to the e-mail.

The water damage done to the Bancroft Annex and Owens Hall can't be determined yet, Boyd said, because only fire and safety personnel are allowed to enter.

Even though firefighters extinguished the fire at around 3 p.m. Sunday, according to a university press release, a crew is on the scene to check for hot spots.

Kinard may open tomorrow
Kinard doesn't have any damage, but does have "a faint smell of smoke," Boyd wrote in the e-mail. It could be open tomorrow afternoon, but the time is still unknown, she wrote.

Faculty and staff should still not come to work in Kinard Monday, according to the e-mail.

Faculty can get items from offices
The main part of Bancroft was expected to re-open Tuesday, but will not be open for five days, Boyd wrote.
University officials hope to shorten that time though.

Faculty and staff who have offices in the main part of Bancroft can get materials from their offices Monday following this schedule:
  • 1 p.m. mathematics department faculty and staff & modern language arts faculty and staff
  • 1:30 p.m. social work department faculty and staff (only those with offices in the main part of Bancroft)
  • 2 p.m. history department faculty and staff
  • 2:30 p.m. English department faculty and staff
  • 3 p.m. speech department faculty and staff
  • 3:30 p.m. political science department faculty and staff

They should meet on the front porch of Bancroft and will be escorted in and out. Faculty and staff will only have 20 minutes and should bring a flashlight.

Any professors who need information from their hard drives should contact April Lovegrove at lovegrovea@winthrop.edu no later than noon on Monday.

Bancroft Annex unaccessible to professors
Professors and staff who have offices in the annex will not be able to get any items from their offices for two to three weeks, Boyd said. They will be moved to temporary offices until the middle of the summer.

"We do not know the extent of the damage in the Annex although we are hopeful that the damage is not extensive," Boyd wrote in the e-mail.
