Results from the latest Winthrop Poll will be made available on Study Day.

This past week, survey callers asked South Carolina voters about GOP presidential candidates, the president’s job rating and the economy, according to an e-mail sent to The Johnsonian by university relations.

“Everyone with a working phone in South Carolina has the same probability of appearing in the sample,” said Scott Huffman, professor of political science and founder of the university’s social behavioral research lab.

As the state holding the first-in-the-South Republican primary, South Carolina is a key state for candidates to win if they hope to make it to the final running in the bid for presidency.

The Winthrop Poll is a long-term survey meant to help public policymakers stay in touch with attitudes and opinions of South Carolina voters and citizens.

Past polls have featured results gauging citizen opinion about current GOP candidates gearing for the first-in-the-South primary, possible outcomes for the 2010 gubernatorial elections and how citizens in the South rate President Barack Obama’s work while in office.

South Carolina’s primary will be Jan. 21.
