Record-setting season continues for Howard

 

Winthrop’s Ashley Howard claimed a school record in the weight throw event at the Appalachian State Invitational on Thursday.

Howard sent the weight soaring to a distance of 57’ 11” and landed in first place. Sasha Robinson (400m dash) and Sharone Honor (55m hurdles) also finished first in their events.

 

Lady Eagles’ tennis team rises in rankings

 

Winthop’s Lady Eagles tennis team moved from No. 70 in the latest national rankings to No. 58.

Winthrop currently has a 3-2 record and next will play at home March 6 against No. 33 ranked South Florida.

 

Eagles baseball team strikeout competition

 

The Winthrop baseball team began the season 3-0 after beating Marist 19-4 Sunday at Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles also beat Northwestern University and George Mason University during the Bojangle’s Baseball Classic. Winthrop’s Eddie Rohan drove in five runs against Marist.

 

Softball team scores first wins of season

 

After close loses during their first two games, the Winthrop softball team won their first games of the season.

Participating in the Red & Black Showcase, hosted by the University of Georgia, Winthrop beat Virginia Tech, Bowling Green and Western Carolina. The Eagles only loss during the Showcase came against the host Bulldogs. 

The Eagles’ victories came at a combined score of 19-8. Winthrop returns to action Saturday during the Winthrop Early Bird Tournament. Morgan State and Siena will participate in the event.

 

Tennis team searches for first win

 

Winthrop’s men’s tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 52 ranked UNC Wilmington.

The Eagles are 0-4 and are still looking for their first victory of the season.  Nadav Ruppin gave Winthrop their only victory in the Wilmington match, as he won 6-2, 6-1.
