Portiolli wins conference award
Winthrop’s Giovanna Portiolli was named Freshman of the Week by the Big South Conferenc.
Portiolli won her four matches (two doubles, two singles) against Gardner-Webb and UNC Ashville.
Eagle defensive stopper one of nations best
Mantoris Robinson, a senior from Charlotte, NC, was named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Defensive All-America Team.
Robinson averaged 1.9 steals per game and 6.2 rebounds per game, which ranked him 5th and 13th in the conference respectively. He was named 2010 Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Tennis teams dominate conference foe
Winthrop’s men and women tennis teams beat UNC Asheville 6-1, 7-0 respectively in conference play.
The men won all of their single matches, while the women won every double and single match. The win pushed the men’s record to 3-0 in conference play, and women 3-1.
Softball team on three game slide
Winthrop took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning, before the Liberty Flames scored 3 consective runs to beat the Eagles 3-2.
The Eagles are on a three game conference losing streak for the first time since 2006. Winthrop is now 20-14 overall and 3-3 in conference.
