Restaurant, bar near campus opening soon

A new restaurant and bar called the Pub House will soon be opening near Winthrop.
Proprietor Chad Sangaree hopes it will offer students a new, cheap and accessible hangout spot other than
Scandals and The Money. He said that although the establishment will serve alcohol, he doesn’t want to market the Pub House as a saloon.
“It’s really a restaurant,” he said. “We’re going to be serving chicken, hamburgers, oysters and shrimp from the Carolina coast and award-winning barbecue.”
Sangaree’s barbecue cook won a cook-off for the best recipe in Charlotte.
“There will also be a take-out option for anyone who just wants to walk down the block from their dorm and get a quick bite,” he said.
Sangaree said he always wanted to open his own restaurant.
“It took about awhile to have the Special Law Enforcement Department grant me a liquor license. After months of waiting, they finally came up from Columbia to inspect the kitchen,” he said.
The department gave it an “A” rating.
To attract more Winthrop students, the Pub House is offering 10 percent off all food with a Winthrop ID.
“The initial prices are already going to be some of the lowest in the Rock Hill area,” Sangaree said.
The Pub House will also have a game room with an old-fashioned jukebox, dart boards and a pool table.
He said he hopes the Pub House becomes a fun, well-known place for students and Rock Hill residents to come, kick back and have a cheap, good time. The building, near the Bookworm, used to be the Coast Grille, but it was shut down in June of 2009, Sangaree said. He bought it from former owner Keith Elliot.
To Sangaree, the name “Pub House” seems practical.
“Well, if you come inside you can tell that it’s a pub. The building, though, was obviously a house. I decided to call it the Pub House,” he said.
The house was originally constructed in 1905, Sangaree said.
The Pub House is set to open in no more than two weeks; it has been in preparation for almost six months.
Its hours of operation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. from Monday to Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday.
Sangaree invites anyone who is interested to stop by.
“If a student or anyone else here in Rock Hill would like to come by the Pub House and take a look inside, they’re more than welcome to,” he said. “The place isn’t open yet, but the door’s open.”
