On Aug. 22, Winthrop Police Chief Frank Zebedis sent an email informing students of “Operation C.L.A.W.” (Computer or Laptop Anti-theft Watch), a computer program that campus police says will help in the recovery of stolen laptop computers and even Android mobile devices. C.L.A.W. is a multi-platform computer program that can be installed by the user and stays disabled until the computer is stolen. At that time, the user is to notify campus police, who will in turn activate the program. The next time the stolen computer connects to the internet, the software will send out an alert giving its location.
The email also provides a link to the Winthrop University site, where students can download the program and install to their local machine. C.L.A.W. software installation instructions and files are available for: Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Ubuntu Linux. In addition an option also exists for Android mobile devices.
