An unlocked service truck was stolen overnight from the construction site of the DiGiorgio Campus Center, according to a Campus Police incident report filed Wednesday.
The vehicle, a white 1998 Ford F-150, was reportedly unlocked and the keys were left inside the ignition. It also had a Leitner Construction decal on both doors, a 55-gallon diesel fuel tank in the bed of the truck and two white side panel tool boxes.
Jack Leitner, vice-president of Leitner Construction Company, said that the truck was parked outside of the job fence, where most people working on the site park.
Leitner said that no expensive tools were in the truck at the time of the theft and he thinks that whoever stole it probably took it for the fuel.
He said that the keys were left in the truck’s ignition because of the construction site’s security.
“Winthrop is the safest place we work,” Leitner said.
Still, he said that that’s no excuse for leaving the keys in the truck and employees of Leitner would not have done so if they had been working anywhere else.
Assistant Chief of Campus Police Kenneth Scoggins said information about stolen vehicles are entered into a nationwide computer database called NCIC.
“…It [the database] allows for the vehicle information, as well as its theft status, to be readily available to all law enforcement agencies across the country,” Scoggins said.
Scoggins said that the vehicle information was also given to other York County law enforcement agencies in the form of a “BOLO” or “be on the lookout.”
According to the official police report, the vehicle was valued at $7,500. There are currently no leads.
