Cost of on-campus rooms, meal plans increases

By Claire Byun

Winthrop students will pay an increase of 3 percent in room and board rates and a 2 percent increase in food costs next year.

The Winthrop University Board of Trustees decided to raise the rates in their quarterly board meeting yesterday.

The full cost of attendance for the 2010-2011 school year will be decided during the June 4 meeting. The tuition and academic fees will depend on the state budget, which has not been decided by state lawmakers yet.

Karl Folkens, board member, explained the reason for the room fee increase is the free services Winthrop gives students, such as the living and learning communities in residence halls. Also, laundry services that are free to students cost money to the university.

“Free laundry has a cost,” Folkens said.

Residential rates will increase 3.2 percent for traditional and suite-style residence hall rooms.
Rates for a double room, suite style, will increase $67 to $2,188, while a double room, hall bath style, will increase $66 to $2,131.

Students who chose suite style single occupancy will pay an $112 increase, equaling $4,354, and those in hall bath style, single occupancy will pay $110 more, or $4,240.

One-bedroom and two-bedroom apartment room fees in Roddey Apartments have been reconfigured and now will cost $1,600 and $1,000 per student, respectively.

The board approved a 2.1 percent, or $25 increase, in student meal plans. This equates to $1,225 meal plan rate per student, per semester.
