Students interested in studying sustainability have even more options thanks to the recent creation of the sustainability minor and the introduction of a new sustainability course.

Offered in spring 2012, the new sustainability course (SUST 102) is open to anyone interested in studying sustainability.

Chris Johnson, Sustainability Coordinator for Winthrop University, will teach the new course. SUST 102 is the introduction to sustainability studies. “It’s a really good opportunity to introduce students to the idea of sustainability,” Johnson said.

In addition to discussing the basics of sustainability, Johnson plans on referencing local examples of sustainability. “My hope is that there is an opportunity to observe instances of sustainability,” Johnson said.

Johnson currently teaches PHED 476 Facilities Management and Design, which is a course designed around the role and responsibilities of facility management and design in sport.

As for what projects SUST 102 will include, Johnson is not revealing the details just yet. “I’ve got lots of ideas,” Johnson said.

However, he did note that it is his goal to make the class “engaging, interactive and exciting.”

The intro to sustainability class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

The brand new sustainability course is part of the sustainability minor. “The sustainability minor is a new addition to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies,” said Marsha Bollinger, Department Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies.

“Students will be exposed to sustainability issues is human systems (economics, for instance) as well as in natural systems (environmental biology, for instance) and will be encouraged to apply principles of sustainability to real world problems,” said Bollinger.

Because this class and the minor are so new, details are still being determined.
