Mignon Clyburn, perhaps the most powerful member of the Federal Communications Commission at the moment, will be the headline speaker during Winthrop’s 24th annual Mass Communication Week, where a series of guest speakers and university alumni will converge to discuss communication, brand management, journalism and investor relations.

Clyburn, daughter of S.C. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D) and an advocate for transparency and access, will speak to students on Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. in Dina’s Place. She was appointed to the FCC in 2009.

Currently, all eyes are on Clyburn who, though a Democrat, has supported issues that don’t necessarily toe the Democratic Party line like many expected.

The FCC is a national agency that regulates interstate and international communication by wire, Internet, newspapers, radio, satellite, television and cable.

Other guests include: Nicole Coffey, ESPN assignment editor and former professional golfer; Glenn Burkins, editor, founder and publisher of Qcitymetro.com; and Mark Carter, vice president of strategic initiatives and investor relations at Snyder’s-Lance in Charlotte.

“This week-long series tackles some of the issues facing mass media today. We are privileged to have national experts on the subjects including some of our former students,” said William Click, chair of Winthrop’s Department of Mass Communication.

Mass Comm Week is sponsored by the Department of Mass Communication. The events begin on Feb. 27 and end on March 1.
