There’s nothing wrong with being gay. I think most gay people know this already. But there are others who still refuse to accept that humans can have genuine attractions to members of the same sex.

The old argument is that homosexuality is a perversion akin to pedophilia and incest.

Hmmmmm...

Pedophilia is not an ethical sexual practice for obvious reasons. It severely damages victims psyches because, most of the time, it is not consensual. Children are either violently attacked during the intercourse or they are surreptitiously cajoled into the bedroom. It permanently taints sexual activity for youths, and invariably leads to a life time of psychological damage. There have been isolated cases when the sex was consensual. As novelist Laura Albert- a sexual abuse victim-once said in an interview with the Paris Review, “I instigated a lot of sex with my mom’s boyfriends. I didn’t really want to have sex with these men, but I needed a way to survive psychologically.” Even if the sex is consensual, it is still exceptionally damaging to a child’s sexual development and future sexual, as well as psychological health.

Homosexuality is not a perversion. It is a legitimate sexual preference. It occurs in other species as well as humans. Some suggest that two women’s or two men’s inability to reproduce breaks the laws of nature. Well, cultural practices like monogamy and love itself are also counter intuitive when it comes to reproduction. But we consider those things to be highly moral.

There are no logical arguments against homosexuality.

You cannot be cured of gayness, just the same way I cannot be cured of loving boobies.

What about the Bible? The Leviticus verse that condemns homosexuality is placed just a few lines under the verse that says people who eat shellfish should be put to death. If we’re going to be biblical literalists, we might as well start killing everyone in Joe’s Crab Shack before we go bomb the gay disco. The Bible is a lengthily, self-contradicting, multi-authored work that is “inspired” by religious teachings of random historical figures. It’s a work of allegorical fiction. It’s not a history textbook. It’s just another book.

Sure the thought of a bearded kiss freaks me out, but I’m not going to stop other people from loving each other. I think the idea of anal sex with another man is pretty gross. I’m sure a lot of gay guys think the idea of eating out a vagina is equally gross. Just because I think cereal is a nasty food, doesn’t mean no one should get to eat it.

But isn’t marriage a sacred institution. No! No it’s not. Marriage is a beautiful union between two people. That’s all. There’s a lot of well-to-do gay couples that could provide a loving and healthy home for the many unwanted children in the foster care system. If anything, gay marriage would forge a more helpful and robust generation of children who come from two-parent households. We need to let go of the cultural myth that the every kid needs a father and mother. Every kid needs loving parents, period.

If anyone reads this and feels like I’m off the mark, I would gladly meet with them over a coffee to continue in changing their mind. I’ve also been working out a whole bunch, so if anybody’s looking for a good bar fight, I’m game for that too.

Viva la homosexuality. All my gay friends out there, you keep telling society to suck it.
