After a long layoff resulting from weather, the Winthrop Track and field team returned to competition Saturday.
Winthrop’s 4x400 women’s relay team set a new school record that had stood for 11 years at the Akron Invitiational.
Sasha Robinson, Latasha Watson, Amami Antia-Obong and Monique James posted a time of 3:54.59.
They beat the old record, 3:58.3, by almost four seconds.
The meet consisted of 10 teams including host the University of Akron, the University of Pittsburgh and Ohio State University.
The record-setting time landed the relay team in fifth place overall.
The relay team’s feat was one of several strong performances by members of track and field team.
Ashley Howard continued her amazing season.
Howard won the indoor discus throw event with a toss of 154 feet 9 inches.
Howard dominated the field as the second place finisher’s throw was 15 feet behind her heave.
The Ohio native broke a school record earlier this season in the weight throw contest too.
4X400 relay team member Robinson set the pace for the Eagles early.
Robinson won the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.15 seconds.
She was 4 one-hundredths of second away from breaking the school record.
On the men’s side, Keary Sims took first place in the triple jump.
Sims leaped 46 feet 7 inches.
Sims also finished fifth in the 60 meter hurdles.
Not to be outdone, Dexter Yound, Carrie Phillips, Adam Fruedenthal and Travis Coleman all posted top five finishes in their respective events.
Young finished second in the high jump, Phillips placed fourth in the 3000 meter dash, Fruedenthal took fourth in the men’s 3000 meter and Coleman ended in fifth place in the shot put.
The Eagles return to the track Feb. 18 when they will take part in the Appalachian State Invitational.
