Dining services offered help to firefighters during Owens fire last Saturday and Sunday.
As firefighters battled the blaze at Owens Saturday and Sunday, dining services made sure they were fed.
The staff served dinner, boxed lunches for overnight Saturday and breakfast on Sunday, said Pam Yurkovic, director of dining services. About 250 meals were served, she said.
Yurkovic said she got a phone call from Karen Jones, assistant vice president for academic affairs, Saturday requesting food for the firefighters.
“We knew that they were going to be here for a while early on,” Jones said. “I just knew the right people to call.”
Jones made the call around 5 p.m., and dining services had the food at the scene for the firefighters about an hour later, she said.
“Those firefighters worked really hard battling the fire,” Jones said. “They called in a lot of shifts.”
ARAMARK paid for the food delivered to the scene, Yurkovic said. Yurkovic and seven of her staff members also provided water and ice at the scene.
But staff members weren’t the only ones helping, Jones said. Some students delivered homemade cookies to the firefighters Sunday.
