An open letter to WU administration

As the semester comes to a close, I reflect on my impact on Winthrop and ask, “How have I given back?” “How have my peers given back?”
This institution has given us the ability to branch out, to grow, to experience new things and to serve the community. I think of these things, and then I think about the push for a democratic student government at Winthrop.
Nine years ago, the old student government was disbanded, and a temporary council, the Council of Student Leaders, was put in place while student government at Winthrop was rethought.
The dynamics of the student body have changed. As times grow tough and new challenges plague the student body, an outcry for a voice has emerged. However, our plea for representation, our pleas for answers fall to deaf ears, as our fabled “Ministry of Truth” continues to pursue its own agenda at the expense of its students.
This is addressed to those who live inside the confines of Tillman, who make the rules and ignore the students, the persons responsible for the livelihood of this institution. We have waited long enough, and the message is clear: We want change. The question is, are you willing to work with us, or are you against us?
