A reporter covering politics in Columbia is among the guests that will get the spotlight at the 22nd annual Mass Communication Week, a weeklong series of presentations and lectures designed to reflect on the changing landscape of today’s issues.

Seanna Adcox, a Winthrop graduate of 1996, will talk to students at 10 a.m. in Owens G02 discussing her experience covering the state house.

This week is made possible by collaboration among faculty in the mass communication department. Also involved in the week are three students in the mass communication practicum class who worked with professors to put the event together.

Senior Kelsey Lockliear, junior Paulina Cuadrado and senior Ashley Hunter are all integrated marketing communication majors who worked together to develop posters, press releases and other promotional tools to spread word about the weeklong event of lectures and presentations.

Speakers will address issues such as education, environment, and politics during the event, themed “Changing Views.”

The speakers will cover a little bit of everything, Hunter said.

Hunter said she’s really excited about the entire week.

“[The speakers] will be bringing to light issues even I didn’t know about,” Hunter said.

Tuesday will feature Yvonne Simmons, WBT-TV assistant news director, speaking at 12:30 in Owens G02 on “Making it in Broadcast Management”. Later on that afternoon, Ben Muller, another Winthrop alumnus, will present his talk on “Branding” in Johnson 101 at 3:30. Muller works for Hanesbrands, Inc.

Wednesday’s itinerary will feature Sheila Solomon speaking on “Cross Media Management” in Owens G02 at 10 am.

The afternoon will include a panel of Winthrop Alumni speaking on their own personal stories and experiences in the mass media field. The panel includes Erin Miller (’07), Keri Boyce (’08), and Allison Rauch (’07). They will be speaking in Johnson 117 at 3:30.

Donna Stine, a former policy advisor for former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, will be speaking twice on Thursday, March 3. Her first presentation is at 11 am in Sims 215 entitled “The Politics of Environmental Policy: An Insider’s Perspective”. This talk will be a cultural event for students.

Stine will be speaking again at 12:30 in Owens G02 on “Crisis and Media Coverage: Covering the Midwest’s Largest Oil Spill”.

All of the events for the week are free and available to any student regardless of their major.
